DBS Hong Kong — Trust Your Spark: Customer Protection Campaign

Use this as a reference

Project Background: Protecting What Customers Have Worked For

“Everyone’s hard-earned achievements deserve protection” is the promise at the centre of this DBS story. In responding to financial scams, the film looks beyond technical systems to the awareness and responsibility of frontline staff. Darkroom Studio was commissioned to document branch manager Apple’s experience and the human role in fraud prevention.

Storytelling Approach: Responding Through Trust

The film combined an interview with reconstructed scenes, following the emotional journey from identifying a risk to intervening:

Connecting Information and Action: The story begins with law enforcement and DBS’s internal Financial Crime and Security Services (FCSS) team detecting a suspicious transaction. Brisk editing connects back-office analysis with Apple receiving the alert on the frontline, showing how the teams worked together in this account.

Trust as Part of the Response: Apple’s account centres on communication rather than a purely procedural intervention. Close-ups of her assured, earnest expression accompanied her explanation of how professional knowledge and a longstanding relationship helped her persuade the customer to reconsider. The story presents trust as an important part of fraud prevention.

The Significance of Everyday Work: The ending emphasises taking every customer question seriously. Scenes of Apple and her team at work connect the incident with day-to-day service and the responsibility they describe towards customers’ assets.

In Use: A Human Story About Trust

Through Apple’s experience, the film gave the idea of banking security a personal context. It showed the role of people alongside systems and provided DBS with a story about the relationships involved in protecting customers.

Q&A

How did the film connect trust with the protection of customers’ assets?+

The film presents trust as something built over time through the care taken with customers’ money. It introduces the risk-control and security processes behind the service, making an abstract sense of reassurance more tangible. The story connects this support with the campaign’s invitation to “Trust Your Spark”.

How did Darkroom Studio make an abstract feeling of trust visible?+

We used stable camerawork and balanced compositions, avoiding elaborate effects to establish a steady visual tone. Close attention to expressions during conversations between banking staff and customers gave the professional relationship a human dimension that viewers could recognise.

What can a security-focused brand film communicate for a wealth-management business?+

Questions about asset protection matter to wealth-management customers. A film can explain the people, procedures and responsibilities involved, giving existing and prospective customers context for further discussion. In this project, the imagery focused on DBS’s approach to customer protection and the people working behind it.
