Bowtie: Diabetes in Younger Adults — Health Education Video
Use this as a referenceProject Background: Looking Beyond the Idea of an Older Person’s Condition
Diabetes is often associated with older people, while this project focused on its relevance to younger audiences. Digital insurer Bowtie wanted to raise awareness of the subject and introduce its insurance offering for people with diabetes. Darkroom Studio’s brief was to make a serious healthcare topic accessible and engaging for a younger audience.
Content Approach: Everyday Experiences and Expert Explanation
The production combined a practical demonstration with expert commentary in an approachable factual-entertainment format:
A Familiar Starting Point: Young colleagues discussed everyday eating habits, including full-sugar bubble tea and a fondness for white rice, before taking an on-camera finger-prick blood glucose test. Their reactions provided an immediate introduction to the questions explored in the film.
Making Information Visible: Clear motion graphics supported explanations of more complex concepts, including glycaemic index (GI) and insulin resistance, translating numerical and physiological information into visual examples.
Pacing the Information: The edit balanced informal conversation with the medical explanation, moving from a discussion of food choices, including minimally processed foods, to insurance underwriting information in a coherent sequence.
In Use: An Accessible Health-Education Film
The film used humour alongside professional explanation to explore what people mean by diabetes “reversal”. It provided Bowtie with educational material connecting health questions with the subject of planning medical cover.

We used information visualisation to support the doctor’s explanation of blood glucose changes and bodily processes. Clear motion graphics combined with the spoken discussion made specialist concepts easier to follow within an accessible, concise film.
Why might a digital insurer such as Bowtie produce health-information films?+
A health-education film allows an insurer to introduce topics relevant to its audience through content rather than product messaging alone. In this project, the aim was to provide a useful explanation and establish an approachable format for discussing health and medical cover.
