Dear Jane — Twenty Years After: 10th Anniversary Live Music Video

Use this as a reference

The Brief: Revisiting a Hong Kong Coliseum Milestone

Twenty Years After looks towards the future while acknowledging the past. To mark Dear Jane’s tenth anniversary, the production team was commissioned to turn highlights from the Hong Kong Coliseum concert into a live music video. Performance, effort and emotion form a record of the bond between the band and its fans.

The Approach: The Scale of the Show and the Detail of the Moment

Multi-camera live footage interweaves the force of the stage performance with more intimate moments backstage:

Intimate and Epic: The opening follows the band through make-up, a pre-show huddle and the anticipation before stepping onto the stage. These private moments contrast with the intensity of the performance and show the people behind it.

A Sea of Lights: The audience is central to the film. Director JUDE uses wide shots to record the Coliseum’s sea of light sticks and the crowd singing together. Smiles, tears and shared reactions connect the live images with the song’s themes of memory and listening.

Building with the Music: The edit follows the song’s progression from its quieter verses to the release of the chorus. Close-ups of the musicians’ concentration and vocalist Tim’s performance bring the emotion of the live show into the screen version.

The Finished Film: A Record of a Shared Experience

The live music video gives the concert a lasting screen record. Fans who attended can revisit it, while those who were not there can see the energy of Dear Jane’s performance. It forms part of the band’s tenth-anniversary story.

Q&A

What narrative approach was taken for the tenth-anniversary music video?+

To mark the band’s tenth anniversary, Darkroom Studio used a live concert documentary approach rather than a fictional narrative. Backstage at the Coliseum, the camera follows make-up, the band’s huddle and the anticipation of going on stage. These intimate perspectives contrast with the full performance, connecting the unseen preparation with the public moment in the band’s anniversary story.

How was the audience’s collective energy captured in a venue of this scale?+

The audience is part of the performance. We used multi-camera live filming, combining stage coverage with wide shots of the Coliseum’s light sticks. The edit links fans waving, crying and singing together with Tim’s performance, bringing individual reactions into the wider atmosphere of the show.

Why turn concert footage into an official music video?+

A live music video can support community building by giving fans a way to revisit a concert and share it with people who could not attend. This record of a shared experience offers another point of connection between the band and its audience, without requiring a separate fictional story.
