Shun Nam: Mid-Autumn Mooncake Recipes
Use this as a referenceProject background: bringing a traditional flavour home
For the Mid-Autumn Festival, Shun Nam introduced DIY mooncake sets to invite families to enjoy making mooncakes together. Darkroom Studio was commissioned to produce a tutorial series showing how the brand's fillings are used to make snow-skin and molten-custard mooncakes, with instructions accessible to people new to baking.
Visual approach: an inviting view of the cooking process
The films use techniques suited to short online recipe viewing:
Overhead views and pace: A top-down camera angle shows each stage clearly, from preparing the wrapper and adding the filling to pressing the mould. The edit removes waiting time while retaining the key actions, giving viewers an overview in a little over a minute.
Texture and food presentation: In the snow-skin film, close views show the soft wrapper and smooth filling. Gentle, cooler-toned lighting supports the fresh character of the dessert. In the salted egg-yolk custard film, a close-up of the cut mooncake reveals the flowing centre, with warm golden lighting bringing out the colour and texture.
A step-by-step demonstration: Ingredient quantities and baking times appear clearly on screen. Together with the demonstrations, these details help viewers follow the recipe and understand the steps involved.
Creative outcome: recipe guidance for a seasonal product
The series provides visual instructions for the DIY sets and material for Shun Nam's Mid-Autumn communication. It brings product demonstration and seasonal food content together in a format for social media.

Q&A
How do the films show the texture of the ingredients?+
The filling is central to the mooncake. Darkroom Studio uses macro cinematography to reveal the smooth lotus-seed paste and the sheen of salted egg yolk. Carefully placed lighting brings out the ingredients' colours, the richness of the filling and the finish of the wrapper, making the differences in texture visible on screen.
How are the more involved mooncake-making steps explained clearly?+
To help less experienced viewers follow the process, we combine brisk but clear editing with on-screen instructions. Filling, moulding and baking are divided into a step-by-step guide. Close views of the hands show the key movements, keeping the practical technique at the centre of the tutorial.
How does the series communicate Shun Nam's brand beyond the recipe?+
The series connects Shun Nam with the passing on of familiar flavours. Alongside practical instructions, it uses a warm, personal narrative. Seasonal styling and warm-toned scenes emphasise the care involved in making something by hand and sharing it with family, linking a traditional product with contemporary family routines.
