HKSH Centenary Documentary: A Century of Memories
Use this as a referenceProject Background: A Century of Care
Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital marked its centenary in 2022. From its beginnings in 1922 to its development as a medical centre, the institution has been part of a century of change in Hong Kong healthcare. Darkroom Studio was commissioned to make a commemorative film that traces this history through stories from different generations.
Narrative Approach: History Told through Objects and People
The film uses objects and personal recollections to connect its historical material, rather than presenting the anniversary as a chronological list of milestones.
Historical artefacts: Close views of medical books from the 1880s, an old typewriter and the hospital's historic nameplate give physical form to the past. These objects connect earlier generations of medical practice with the hospital today.
Leadership interviews: Members of the hospital's management share their family connections and memories of the institution. The stories include the decision not to reduce staffing or salaries during SARS in 2003, and the establishment of a medical foundation to support training.
Past and present: The edit places black-and-white archive photographs alongside footage of contemporary medical facilities, including the expanded medical centre in Hong Kong East. This contrast presents changes in facilities while keeping the focus on continuity in patient care.
Purpose: Connecting Past and Future
Through historical material and personal memories, the documentary presents the hospital's approach to service and gives staff and viewers a way to understand the stories behind its development.
Q&A
How does the HKSH centenary documentary tell a story spanning a hundred years?+
The narrative connects historical objects with personal recollections. Medical books from the 1880s, a typewriter and the hospital nameplate provide tangible links to the past, while interviews with the hospital leadership explain the memories and decisions associated with that history.
How does the film connect heritage with innovation?+
The edit brings archive photographs together with footage of contemporary medical facilities, including the medical centre in Hong Kong East. The contrast shows changes in the hospital's physical setting while maintaining a thread about continuity in care.
What can an anniversary documentary communicate about an organisation's values?+
Specific stories can make an organisation's stated values easier to understand. In this film, recollections of decisions made during SARS and of investment in medical training provide a concrete starting point for discussing the institution's responsibilities to its staff and the wider community.
