Hollo — AI-Driven Mental Healthcare: Technology with a Human Focus
Use this as a referenceProject Background: Making Unseen Mental Health Needs Understood
People living with long-term health conditions can experience considerable psychological pressure, while conventional healthcare may struggle to provide continuous monitoring. Hollo, a MedTech start-up described in the project as supported by Microsoft and Cyberport, sought to address this need with AI. Darkroom Studio was commissioned to explain the technology to investors and the public while conveying the human concern behind it.
Storytelling Approach: Technology with Human Understanding
The film needed to balance an explanation of complex technology with an emotional connection:
Visualising Invisible Data: Mental states are difficult to show directly. Motion graphics illustrated how Hollo’s concept uses biomarkers and less visible signals collected through phone cameras and wearable devices. Fluid interface animation presented the proposed process of AI analysis and the insights it could provide to clinicians.
People-Centred Technology: The film intercut healthcare settings with scenes of patients’ daily lives. It presented Hollo as more than a stream of data, introducing its Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) content and gamified experience as ways to support people between appointments.
Establishing Professional Context: The founder’s account and references to clinical collaboration with the University of Hong Kong and Queen Mary Hospital gave the film context for explaining the company’s research and professional relationships.
In Use: Introducing a MedTech Brand
The film translated Hollo’s AI healthcare concept into an accessible brand story. Alongside explaining product features, it communicated the company’s ambition to use technology to support people’s lives, providing material for funding discussions and potential partnerships.

Q&A
How did the Hollo film connect the abstract ideas of AI and mental health?+
The film centred on technology with a human purpose. Hollo’s concept uses AI analysis of user behaviour to support mental healthcare. Rather than presenting data alone, Darkroom Studio focused on interviews with the founder and users. Warm, assured interview images and natural outdoor settings helped communicate the empathy behind the MedTech product.
How did Darkroom Studio use visual effects to explain the app’s features?+
To visualise a process that is otherwise difficult to see, we used AR-style motion graphics. As shown in the thumbnail, app elements such as mood tracking and conversation bubbles appear beside the subject as translucent heads-up displays. This approach to integrating interfaces into live-action scenes gives viewers a direct visual explanation of how the AI-enabled service is intended to fit into everyday life.
Why might a MedTech start-up produce a concept film?+
For a technology start-up such as Hollo, a clear film can support pitch presentations and investor communication. It can turn complex algorithms and healthcare concepts into a visual story that is easier to understand in a short time. This helps introduce the product’s intended market and social value to public audiences, potential investors and partners.
