The Brief: Explaining Integrated Cancer Care

HKIO wanted a film series to introduce its integrated oncology service, bringing diagnosis, treatment, psychological support, nutrition and recovery-related care into one location. Darkroom Studio’s role was to turn the centre’s specialist information into accessible, approachable video content.

The Approach: Clear Information with a Human Perspective

The production used the following approaches to introduce the service and help viewers follow the information:

Making Integrated Care Visible: The films introduce the clinical oncologists, registered dietitians and clinical psychologists available at the centre. The edit connects their contributions to explain the multidisciplinary approach and the different kinds of support described by the team.

Communicating Clearly: Concise interview sections and supporting footage introduce subjects such as immunotherapy and radiotherapy, allowing specialists to explain their roles within the centre’s approach to care.

An Approachable Tone: Bright, clean images and direct contributions from healthcare professionals create a calm setting for the information, combining a professional presentation with a personal voice.

The Finished Series: An Introduction to the Centre’s Approach

The series explains the centre’s whole-person approach to prospective patients and families. Organising the information into clear subjects creates accessible material for the centre’s website and social channels.

Q&A

How does the series hosted by Jessica Hsuan introduce the centre’s integrated cancer care?+

The films use in-depth interviews in which Jessica Hsuan speaks with oncology specialists. Darkroom Studio developed interview scripts to make subjects such as multidisciplinary consultation and precision medicine easier to follow. Her questions bring an accessible, non-specialist perspective to the discussions, while her familiar presence provides continuity across the series.

How does the film balance specialist information with attention to people?+

Alongside medical equipment, the films include interactions between patients and healthcare staff. The camera follows doctors listening and explaining, and the care team providing support. This human perspective introduces the centre’s stated emphasis on emotional support alongside medical care.

Why organise educational content as a series of subject-specific films?+

Cancer care involves several specialties and stages. Short films on subjects such as diagnosis, treatment and recovery allow viewers to find material relevant to their information needs. This subject-led approach makes the information easier to browse and gives the centre material that can be shared individually across its website and social channels.
