HKMU SAO — Student Stories: From Campus to Market

Use this as a reference

The Brief: Introducing Student Entrepreneurship

HKMU’s Student Affairs Office supports aspiring student entrepreneurs through the Metro Challenge programme, which offers funding, mentoring and opportunities to put ideas into practice. Darkroom Studio was commissioned to produce an interview film using students’ experiences to encourage others to consider taking their first steps in business.

The Approach: Two Stories of Enthusiasm and Learning

The film uses a warm documentary approach to weave together the stories of two students working in different fields:

Making Ideas Visible: For Ka Wai’s smoothie business, close filming shows fresh fruit and the preparation process, presenting her focus on drinks made without additives. For Yu E’s handmade work, the camera concentrates on her hands and her expression as she makes each piece, conveying her wish to connect with customers through what she creates.

Connecting Students with Support: Alongside the difficulties of starting a business, the interviews explore the support offered by HKMU, from Metro Challenge funding to mentors sharing their experience. These accounts explain the university’s practical role in the students’ projects.

The Energy of a Market Stall: B-roll of the students running market stalls shows their interactions with customers and the satisfaction of making a sale. These everyday moments turn the broad idea of entrepreneurship into an experience viewers can recognise.

The Finished Film: Sharing Student Enterprise Stories

The film gives Metro Challenge a human face through the students’ experiences. It records their learning and provides the university with a way to introduce the programme to potential future participants.

Q&A

What storytelling approach does the film use?+

The film follows two parallel stories in a character-led documentary format. Yiu Ka Wai’s drinks business and Yeung Yu E’s handmade accessories provide two different perspectives on starting a venture. Darkroom Studio records the care they put into making products and their mixture of nerves and enjoyment when meeting customers at a market.

How does the film show HKMU’s role in supporting student entrepreneurs?+

The stories include the support available through the Metro Challenge programme. The students describe receiving start-up funding and guidance from mentors, explaining how the university provides resources as well as academic learning.

What can a student interview film offer an educational institution?+

First-person stories can make a programme easier for prospective participants to understand. This film provides material for HKMU to introduce future students to entrepreneurship and communicate an emphasis on innovation and practical experience.
