Project background: recording art in the heart of Central

H Queen's is an arts destination in Central, Hong Kong. During Art Month 2025, Darkroom Studio was invited to produce a film series that went beyond documenting gallery interiors. The films explore connections between audiences, artists, curators and artworks, covering subjects from traditional calligraphy and painting to contemporary practice.

Filming approach: a story in every work

We developed an individual documentary approach for each of the seven films:

Series teaser: Brisk editing brings together the building's architecture and the activity within its exhibitions, introducing the idea of art as part of everyday surroundings.

Tradition and inheritance — New East Auctions: The film focuses on a collection of letters by notable Ming-dynasty figures, using close-ups of paper and ink to explore the history of cultural exchange between China and Japan.

Pop art and symbols — Pace Gallery: The film presents Robert Indiana 's ‘LOVE’ and number works, focusing on the visual impact of geometry and colour.

AI and artistic tradition — Saatchi Gallery: An interview with artist Will St John explores his inspiration from Picasso and use of AI as part of the creative process, considering the relationship between technology and art.

Social encounters and space — The Supper Club: Fluid camera movement explores an open setting without conventional booths, recording an experience that brings art viewing and social interaction together.

Spirituality and prayer — Whitestone Gallery: The feature explores Miwa Komatsu 's ‘Divine Connection’, focusing on the spiritual qualities and sense of prayer within the paintings.

The darker inner self — Tang Contemporary Art: The film examines works by Jonas Burgett and Lorca, using light and shadow to explore themes of trauma, allegory and internal conflict.

Creative outcome: a continuing record of the exhibitions

The series creates a collection of visual material for H Queen's and the participating galleries. Interviews, exhibition footage and post-production bring different aspects of the programme together in films that can be shared with art audiences and collectors through social media and official channels.

Q&A

What does the H Queen's Art Month 2025 series cover?+

The series documents exhibitions at international galleries in H Queen's during Hong Kong Art Month. Curator interviews and guided views of the works take audiences through an art destination extending across different floors in the heart of Central.

How does Darkroom Studio approach an art documentary?+

Art filming requires patience and close attention. Cinematic camera movement and soft lighting help record the colours and textures of individual works. The edit connects the artists' ideas, expressed in interviews, with the architecture of the gallery spaces, building a narrative beyond a simple record of an exhibition.

How can an exhibition film series support an arts destination?+

Exhibitions are temporary, but a film series can create an ongoing digital archive. It gives collectors material to preview online and allows a wider audience to explore the galleries after the exhibition dates. For H Queen's, the series communicates the experience of visiting multiple art spaces within one vertical destination.
