Project Background: A Conversation About Technology and Innovation

Google and HKSTP jointly hosted the “Smarter Digital City” seminar series to explore how AI can support biotechnology and urban development. This event brought together XtalPi Chief Research and Development Officer Dr. Mingjun Yang and Google Health representatives for a fireside chat. Darkroom Studio was commissioned to photograph the event, documenting the exchange of knowledge throughout the session.

Photography Approach: Professionalism and Interaction

For an information-rich, interactive seminar, our photography focused on the speakers’ expertise and the atmosphere in the room:

Speaker Highlights: The images captured speakers’ expressions and gestures on stage, from Dr Mingjun Yang’s concentration while discussing AI data charts to the eye contact between panellists during the fireside chat. Lighting and timing helped convey their engagement with the subject.

Discussion and Atmosphere: Beyond the stage, we documented attentive audience members and the conversations that followed the presentations. Wide-angle group photographs brought the Google and HKSTP teams together in a record of the event.

Technology in Context: The compositions incorporated projected data charts, including “Enformer improves…”, and Google Cloud and HKSTP logos. These details situated the photographs within the event’s technology and data-focused theme.

In Use: Corporate Photography Assets

The photographs provided more than an event record. The case study describes their use across LinkedIn, corporate annual reports and press releases, giving Google and HKSTP visual material for communicating their work in innovation.

Q&A

How do the photographs communicate the focus of Google and HKSTP’s Smarter Digital City event?+

The photography centres on the exchange of ideas. Darkroom Studio documented Google and HKSTP’s joint work on digital-city development, focusing on the fireside chat and expert presentations. Expressions as speakers shared data and insights, together with the audience’s attentive responses, conveyed the seminar’s professional and forward-looking character.

How can indoor seminar or conference photography avoid repetitive images?+

Timing is essential. Alongside formal group photographs, we use candid photography to capture natural eye contact, gestures and moments of recognition or amusement in the audience. Different viewpoints—from room-wide compositions to speaker close-ups—give a seated seminar a sense of story and atmosphere.

Why do technology companies invest in professional event photography?+

For a company such as Google, event images can extend its thought leadership beyond the room. Alongside internal archives, a considered set of photographs can support press releases, LinkedIn updates and annual reports. Clear, well-lit compositions help communicate a company’s participation in the innovation and technology community.
