Diabetes Hongkong — Doctors Cheering: A Pandemic Support Campaign
Use this as a referenceThe Brief: Maintaining Connection during the Pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Diabetes Hongkong brought healthcare professionals together on video to offer encouragement and share the campaign’s health messages with people living with diabetes. The brief was to maintain a sense of connection while physical contact was restricted, alongside reminders about well-being and follow-up care.
The Approach: A Familiar Form of Virtual Connection
With in-person contact restricted, we built the film around virtual connection to give the messages a familiar and personal setting:
A Mobile Video-Call Style: Specialists, including Professor Chan Wai-ming and Dr Lo Man-wai, recorded their own messages of encouragement. In post-production, the clips were placed inside mobile-phone frames, drawing on the familiar appearance of a video call with family or friends.
Upbeat Motion Graphics: A bright orange-and-yellow palette and light musical accompaniment support animated text and illustrations. Campaign messages about sustaining the public health effort are presented with energy and a sense of encouragement.
A Presenter to Connect the Messages: The film is introduced and linked by presenter Mui Tau (Lo Chung-yan), whose lively contributions connect the doctors’ messages and give the sequence a consistent pace.
The Finished Film: Messages of Support for a Community
The film brings healthcare professionals’ messages together in a direct, accessible format. Its video-call treatment and warm graphic style communicate solidarity between patients and the people involved in their care.

Q&A
How was the film produced when in-person filming was restricted?+
We used self-recorded contributions from specialist doctors. In post-production, clips of varying image quality were brought together within a consistent mobile video-call design. This approach accommodated remote recording and gave the messages a format familiar from everyday conversations with friends and family.
How did the visual design give the campaign an encouraging tone?+
Warm orange and yellow colours set the tone. Darkroom Studio used lively motion graphics and illustrations to present the campaign’s messages about keeping going during the pandemic. Light background music and the presenter’s Mui Tau (Lo Chung-yan) links bring continuity and a sense of optimism to the health communication.
What can a community-focused film contribute to an NGO’s communication?+
Alongside practical information, a film can provide a channel for encouragement and connection. By bringing healthcare professionals together on screen, the campaign communicates that people living with diabetes have support around them and gives that message a form that can be shared remotely.
