Use this as a referenceThe Brief: Connecting Students, Employers and Opportunity
CityU’s annual Employers’ Luncheon strengthens links between the university and employers across different industries. The 2023 event took Beyond Boundaries as its theme. Darkroom Studio was commissioned to document the occasion, from the student project exhibition to business leaders’ speeches, recording the exchange between education, research and industry.
The Approach: Research in Action and Professional Exchange
Steady, composed camerawork presents both the scale of the event and the details of its conversations:
An Innovation Showcase: The filming focuses on the student project exhibition, including underwater robotics, solar-panel technology and VR experiences. Close-ups of the projects and students explaining their work show practical skills and ideas in action.
Capturing Professional Connections: The film records speeches by Council Chairman Mr Lester Garson Huang, President Professor Way Kuo and keynote speaker Dr Harry Banga, Chairman of The Caravel Group. Conversations between employers, staff and students around the tables show the event’s role in bringing people and opportunities together.
Communicating the Event’s Message: Shots of participants holding Beyond Boundaries and teaching-and-research placards are woven into a measured edit. The visual references connect the event with CityU’s commitment to educating globally minded graduates and contributing to society.
The Finished Film: Presenting the University to Employers
The highlight film brings together the event, student work and employer engagement in a single piece of communication. It gives current and prospective partners a view of the university’s teaching and the practical abilities of its students, supporting conversations about future collaboration.

Q&A
How does the film express the Beyond Boundaries theme?+
The edit brings different disciplines and perspectives together. Darkroom Studio focused on innovation in the student project exhibition, including underwater robotics and VR, and intercut these scenes with speeches by business leaders such as Dr Harry Banga. The sequence connects research with industry discussion and makes the event’s theme visible through the people and work on screen.
How did the filming balance formality with interaction at a large luncheon?+
Composed, steady shots of the Council Chairman and President’s speeches establish the event’s formal setting. Alongside these, the camera captures spontaneous conversations between employers and students. Moving between speeches and candid moments preserves the occasion’s ceremonial character while showing its active exchange of ideas and opportunities.
Why produce an event highlight film for a university employers’ luncheon?+
Employer relationships are an important part of graduate opportunities. An event film can provide a clear introduction to the university and its students. Showing students explaining projects and discussing their work gives existing and prospective employers something concrete to engage with, supporting follow-up discussions about placements, employment and longer-term collaboration.
