HKBU: Shaping Your Future through Transdisciplinary Education
Use this as a referenceProject background: a changing approach to education
‘The world is now breaking boundaries.’ In a fast-changing era shaped by AI, complex global challenges call for perspectives that cross traditional subject boundaries. HKBU's Transdisciplinary Undergraduate Programmes give students the freedom to ‘design their own degree’. Darkroom Studio's task was to make this educational approach tangible through film and explain its distinctive value to students and parents.
Content approach: industry perspectives and student experiences
We used two complementary strands of storytelling to explain the programmes:
Industry perspectives: The film includes interviews with executives from companies such as Google. Speaking as employers, they discuss innovation, critical thinking and adaptability, connecting the transdisciplinary approach with the skills they value in the workplace.
Student-centred learning: We filmed students taking part in company visits and tackling real-life problems. Student interviews explore how the flexibility of the programmes allows them to pursue different interests, rather than simply follow a fixed timetable.
A forward-looking tone: Brisk editing supports the message ‘Shape your world-class future’. The positive, forward-looking atmosphere speaks to students who want to explore beyond established subject boundaries.
Creative outcome: connecting education with future opportunities
The promotional film presents HKBU's approach to educational innovation. By connecting academic ideas with practical career considerations, it helps explain how transdisciplinary learning can prepare students to approach future challenges from more than one perspective.

Q&A
How does the film explain the abstract idea of transdisciplinary education?+
Its central idea is to break boundaries and shape your own future. To make an academic concept visible, the film shows connections between the arts, technology and humanities. Examples include using technology in creative practice and bringing a human perspective to social problems. These situations explain a model in which students combine different strengths to develop an individual learning path.
How does the film speak to Gen Z students considering a new type of programme?+
The creative approach places autonomy and individual choice at the centre. A brisk, forward-looking visual style supports the message ‘Defined by You’. Energetic editing and real campus scenes present an environment for exploring different possibilities, inviting students to consider where their curiosity could lead them.
Why can an explainer film help a university introduce a new degree structure?+
An unfamiliar course structure can be difficult for students and parents to understand. A carefully planned film can turn complex programme ideas into a clear visual explanation within a few minutes. Alongside accurate information, it gives the university a way to communicate its educational approach in a crowded admissions landscape.
