Jill Vidal — Tattoo: A Music Video about Love and Pain
Use this as a referenceThe Brief: Giving Emotion a Visual Form
Tattoo explores love, pain and the traces left by memory. The production team was commissioned to give those emotions a visual story about a relationship with no easy way back. Alongside following the song’s rhythm, the music video uses images to convey the weight of something that remains on the skin and in the mind.
The Approach: A Cinematic Journey through the City at Night
The music video uses a cinematic visual treatment to create an uncertain, melancholy atmosphere:
Symbols and Metaphors: A tattoo provides the central image. Close filming of the tattooing process connects physical pain with the idea of a relationship leaving a lasting mark.
Atmospheric Lighting: City neon, the tattoo studio’s warm yellow light and the glare of a motorbike headlamp create a romantic but uneasy setting. Contrasting colours reflect the characters’ tension and intensity.
A Relationship Told through Gestures: Interactions between Marcus Yuen’s character and the female lead move from closeness on a motorbike to distance after an argument. The direction follows that shift from intensity to separation, linking the narrative with the song’s sense of resignation and resolve.
The Finished Film: A Visual Companion to the Song
The music video adds a visual narrative to the song’s emotional themes. Cinematic images and a difficult relationship story give viewers another way into the music and the performance.

Q&A
How does the video express the abstract themes of love and pain?+
The tattoo motif suggests a memory that cannot simply be erased. Darkroom Studio uses contrasting warm and cool colours: cool blues suggest loneliness and pain, while warmer red light recalls the relationship. Close-up shots follow Jill’s eyes and small changes of expression, giving a physical form to the difficulty of trying to forget.
How does lighting support the singer’s performance?+
To give Jill’s interpretation a focused visual setting, the filming uses silhouette and side lighting. Rather than lighting the whole figure evenly, selected light defines facial contours and body lines, allowing parts of the performer to remain in shadow. This low-key photographic style supports the song’s imagery of feelings and scars kept beneath the surface.
Why use minimal but textured settings?+
A busy background can compete with a performer’s expression. The video uses minimal settings with tactile details, such as weathered walls and open space. Negative space keeps attention on the singer, her voice and her gestures, creating an immersive viewing experience.
