HOY TV — NORMA in New Zealand: A Food Journey
Use this as a referenceThe Brief: A Food and Travel Programme for Television
NORMA in New Zealand is a food and travel programme for HOY TV. Darkroom Studio was commissioned to handle overseas filming for the series. The production brought together New Zealand’s landscapes and detailed food stories within a tight travel schedule, with the picture and sound requirements of television broadcast in mind.
The Approach: Cinematic Images with Informative Storytelling
Our production approach balanced the visual experience of television with the detail of a factual programme:
Cinematic Aerials and Location Filming: For viewing on a television screen, 4K drone footage captures wide views of New Zealand’s snow-covered mountains, lakes and farms. These establishing shots give a sense of scale and place before the programme moves into individual stories.
In-Depth Storytelling: Each location contributes a complete story, from the operation of a deer milk farm and kiwi conservation to the techniques of fly fishing. Interviews and observational filming bring different perspectives to these subjects and give the travel narrative factual depth.
Bringing Farm to Table to the Screen: As a food programme, the series pays close attention to ingredients and cooking. Natural light and close-ups follow Norma preparing local produce, including venison and salmon, connecting the care taken over food with the pleasure of the finished meal.
The Finished Programme: Food, Travel and Environmental Stories
The series was broadcast on HOY TV. Its overseas production combines location coordination, factual storytelling and carefully composed images to bring food, travel and environmental themes to a television audience.

Q&A
How did the television format shape the production?+
To meet the requirements of television broadcast, Darkroom Studio used a cinematic production approach. 4K aerial filming captures broad views of New Zealand’s mountains and lakes, while stabilisers and multiple camera positions provide detailed, steady coverage. These techniques help sustain a visual journey across a full television programme.
How did Darkroom Studio approach in-depth storytelling on an overseas shoot?+
The programme explores culture and the environment alongside food and travel. We visited local communities to develop stories about deer milk farming, kiwi conservation and fly-fishing traditions. Detailed interviews and observational footage place each destination in context and give the series an educational dimension.
How does the camera connect the farm-to-table theme with an appreciation of food?+
The filming connects the origins of ingredients with the process of preparing them. Natural light and close-ups capture Norma cooking outdoors with local produce such as venison and salmon. This farm-to-table approach links people, the natural environment and food, inviting viewers to consider both the flavour of the ingredients and the resources behind them.
