Project Background: A Subtle Change to a Signature Design

“A signature look with a quiet shift.” The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Calendar has a recognisable layout, while this limited edition adds a contemporary character through a sector dial in two shades of grey. Darkroom Studio’s brief was to photograph that subtle change and the design’s balance and elegance.

Photography Approach: Time, Light and Detail

Careful lighting brought together the watch’s construction details and the character of its wearer:

Macro Texture: Precise light emphasised the two grey tones of the dial and the metallic sheen of the hands. Light and shade gave the geometric sector layout depth and highlighted the maison’s design.

Muted Tones: A low-saturation, high-contrast treatment complemented the grey dial. Warm light in the background contrasted subtly with the cooler metal case, creating a quiet, considered atmosphere.

The Watch on the Wrist: Lifestyle photographs captured the model in reflective, composed moments. The watch appeared naturally within gestures and movement, expressing the project’s theme of contemporary elegance.

In Use: Presenting the Limited Edition

The photographs connected the Master Control Calendar’s familiar design with its contemporary details. The visual story introduced the character of the edition, described in the project as limited to 500 pieces, to an audience interested in watchmaking and collecting.

Production breakdown

Objective

Present a limited-edition watch through detail, wearing context and luxury product atmosphere.

Challenge

Watch photography demands careful control of reflection, material, proportion and lifestyle context. Too rigid feels like a catalogue; too loose loses product focus.

Approach

  • Started with product detail, controlling dial, strap, material and reflection.
  • Added lifestyle images so the watch could be imagined in use rather than only inspected.
  • Built a gallery across ratios and compositions for website, social and brand content reuse.

Deliverables

  • Luxury product photography
  • Watch detail images
  • Lifestyle photography
  • Website and social image assets

Reference value

Useful for jewellery, watches, beauty, luxury goods and high-end product photography.

Q&A

Which watch is featured in the photographs?+

The project features the limited-edition Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Calendar. Close attention to the dial and its design details conveyed the watch’s recognisable layout and mechanical character, following the theme of a classic design reinterpreted.

What are the technical challenges of photographing a luxury watch, and how did Darkroom Studio approach them?+

The crystal, hands and metal case create complex reflections, while fine dial textures, such as sunray patterns, need to remain legible. Precise lighting and macro photography controlled distracting reflections and brought out the finishing and three-dimensional structure.

Why do luxury brands commission detailed product photography?+

For a watchmaker such as Jaeger-LeCoultre, product images communicate design and craftsmanship as well as appearance. Close-up still photography can reveal small details that are difficult to appreciate at a glance, giving collectors and prospective customers a clearer view of the object.

What is hardest about watch photography?+

Reflection, material and proportion control. Small angle changes can alter the perceived quality of the product.

Does product photography always need video?+

No. If the goal is detail, catalogue, social stills or website imagery, high-quality photography can carry the story.
